Mini VPS — Lightweight Visual Relocalization for WebAR
Mini VPS is an ongoing research project exploring a lightweight approach to cross-session relocalization for WebAR. Following the discontinuation of 8th Wall's official VPS service, the project investigates whether persistent AR experiences can be achieved without relying on large-scale cloud infrastructure. Rather than recreating platforms such as Google's Geospatial API or Niantic VPS, the goal is to develop a developer-controlled solution optimized for specific environments. The proposed architecture combines visual feature matching, local mapping, and lightweight spatial representations to enable reliable cross-session and cross-device relocalization while minimizing server-side complexity. Current research focuses on evaluating modern mobile devices as a platform for efficient on-device spatial localization, with the long-term vision of making persistent WebAR experiences more accessible, portable, and easier to deploy.
