Kuan Ying Wu

ClapClap is an interactive mixed reality installation that explores memory, connection, and the desire to reach another world through tangible interaction. Originally exhibited at the NEWVIEW × STYLY Exhibition during Bangkok Design Week 2023, the installation is inspired by the mechanical movement of a traditional music box. Visitors rotate a handcrafted wooden crank to gradually generate floating sound spheres within the AR space. Each sphere slowly rises toward the ceiling, and upon making contact, transforms into a portal that reveals fragments of another world beyond the physical space. As more sound spheres are created, additional portals appear throughout the environment, allowing visitors to glimpse multiple hidden spaces from different locations. Rather than serving as a conventional AR effect, each portal becomes a symbolic window connecting two worlds. The work reflects on the longing for loved ones who are no longer present. By repeatedly turning the music box mechanism, visitors gradually open temporary passages into another realm, expressing the hope that memories and emotions can transcend physical boundaries through interactive technology. ClapClap explores how tangible interaction, spatial storytelling, and mixed reality can transform simple physical actions into emotionally meaningful experiences.
