LANGUAGE AND IDENTITY Impacts of Accents on A Speaker’s Identity
A study divulging the presence of accent discrimination in the English language albeit its dominance as the world’s lingua franca. Inequality in addition to privilege bestowed upon different accented pronunciations is analyzed, ultimately demonstrating that the world’s most spoken language, which supposedly connects individuals across national borders, is exceedingly ‘othering’ to those that do not fall under the parameters of a certain accepted accent.
