Great Canadian Entertainment, a leader in Canadian gaming and hospitality, is excited to announce that the World Series of Poker, the richest, most prestigious, and longest-serving poker series, is heading to Toronto for the first WSOP circuit, which will be held at the Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto at Woodbine Racecourse. The WSOP circuit, in partnership with GGPoker, will take place from March 22 to April 1, 2024. Great Canadian Toronto's WSOP circuit, which will feature a total of eight circuit-ring events, is expected to receive a total of $3.9 million, including a $2,000 main event with a total prize money of $2.1 million and a $35,000 high-roller event with more than $850,000. Great Canadian Toronto's new WSOP circuit builds on the momentum generated at the record-breaking 54th annual WSOP held last summer. "We are very excited to partner with GGPoker to introduce World Series Poker to Toronto for the first time. This is an appropriate milestone to create more momentum for the recently opened 30-table Poker Room in Great Canadian Toronto, Canada's newest casino resort," said Robert Katsavelos, general manager of Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto. "We are excited to welcome the North American Poker community and the tournament participants right here in Toronto, and we are confident that this event will be a great success." GGPoker, which sent 774 players to the main event at WSOP last summer, will exclusively run an online qualifying tournament and host branded ambassador at the WSOP circuit in Toronto, Great Canada, including local poker hero Daniel Negreanu. "I've been hosting WSOP events all over the world for over 25 years," says Daniel Negreanu, GGPoker Global Brand Ambassador. "It's very special to finally be able to participate in an event back home." The full schedule of events at the WSOP circuit in Great Canadian Toronto will be announced soon, with Great Canadian Toronto and WSOP stating that they have the right to cancel, change or modify any or all tournament events without notice. The Tri-City area is on the verge of a major development as the Colville Reservation's allied tribes push ahead with the area's first tribal casino plan. As the project enters a pivotal phase of federal approval, new insights are emerging into its scope and potential impact. BIA Holds Virtual Meeting for Environmental Impact Assessment The Secretariat of India (BIA), scheduled for Apr. 24, will hold a virtual public meeting to gather feedback on what should be included in the proposed Environmental Impact Report (EIS) for casinos, local media outlet The Tri-City Herald reported. The EIS, which is mandated by federal law for certain projects, aims to assess the environmental impact of the effort. The ambitious plan laid out by the Colville Tribe includes the construction of an extensive 184,200-square-foot casino, a 200-room hotel, an event center, a restaurant, and an auxiliary facility. Located on 165 acres of Colville-owned land on Kartchner Street north of Highway 395 and the King City Truck Station, the project aims to revitalize the area's economic environment. At the heart of that effort is the "fee-to-trust" process, which facilitates the establishment of companies on non-booking sites such as casinos, hotels, and restaurants under the 1988 Indian Gaming Regulation Act. The BIA is paving the way for the realization of casinos, overseeing the complex process of entrusting designated lands to federal trusts. Yakama Nation Opposes Colville Tribe's Three-Cities Casino Plan While the prospects for economic revitalization are promising, it has not been without those who oppose the project. Among them, the Yakama Nation's allied tribes and bands voiced their opposition, citing the territorial dispute rooted in the 1855 treaty. The Yakama tribe claims that Colville's plan violates ceded territory, especially in the Tri-City area. In response, the Colville tribe argues that Pascoe has historical significance to several compositional tribes, such as the Palus, and that all territorial issues will be resolved through a rigorous federal review process. The proposed casino site, located north of North Capitol Avenue and AutoZone Warehouse near the Kartchner exit, symbolizes the Colville Tribe's desire for economic growth and community development. Despite the lack of tribal operations nearby, private casinos adorn the landscape of Tri-Cities. Notable among them are Wildhorse Casino and Resort near Pendleton, Oregon, and Legends Casino & Hotel in Topanish, run by the Umatilla Reservation Coalition Tribe.
