Final Year Project attached to SIMTech
Evaluated the effectiveness of using large Inconel 718 parts manufactured by Selective Laser Melting (SLM in short which is also a type of 3D printing). This was to determine whether this process would meet industrial requirements for large industrial parts such as gas turbines. As part of the industrial requirements: tensile and hardness tests, preparation of metallographic samples and optical microscopy had to be conducted for 5 different sets of tensile specimens. Only 2 out of 5 sets met industrial requirements. Investigated the thermal strains generated during SLM process by conducting simulation using python programming. The simulation findings have been 80% consistent with test results.
