Back to my passport country

Self-Introduction

Hello! My name is Marisa, and I am half Japanese-Malaysian, born in Fukuoka, Japan, and raised in Singapore and Malaysia. Prior to attending university, I have never lived in Japan before. My rationale for moving to Japan was to learn more about my passport country.

As a child, I often travelled to Japan to spend summer holidays with my grandparents and relatives. It was one of my most memorable childhood memories – everything was exciting and different from the city life in Singapore. I remember going to parks, museums, hot springs, and simply enjoying the vast amount of nature Japan has to offer.

Life in Japan

When it came time to apply for university, I had to decide between attending a local university in Singapore or a university in Japan. Staying in Singapore would be the most practical choice, but I wanted to experience living in Japan. I wanted to try something different. That is why I chose to study in a new, all-English program in Nagoya University. Life as a university student was both exciting and challenging.

TCK Workshop

Towards the final year of university, many people around me was busy with job hunting and applying for grad schools. On the other hand, I wasn’t very motivated and didn’t take job hunting seriously… I was jobless right after graduation, and for a year, I dabbled in several part-time jobs before joining TCK Workshop. I decided to join this company because I believed in their mission – to support other third culture kids through education.

Currently I am teaching English and Math subjects to elementary and high school students. I’ve worked here for a little under a year now, but I have still a lot to learn. I hope I can continue to grow and make a positive impact on someone! :)
