Job Description

What we do

We are a global shipbroking company founded in Denmark in 1914, with a history spanning more than 110 years. Today, over 250 professionals across offices in 15 countries work together to connect shipowners with vessel operators. Sophisticated Advisory Services Beyond Simple Matchmaking Our role goes far beyond arranging the sale, purchase, or chartering of vessels. In recent years, decarbonisation has become one of the most urgent priorities facing the maritime industry. Drawing on our specialist expertise, we provide consulting and advisory services ranging from recommendations on alternative-fuel vessels that comply with the latest environmental regulations to data-driven assessments of vessel and asset values. Connecting Japan with the World Through an Unrivalled Client Network Based in Shimbashi, Tokyo, MB Shipbrokers Asia Limited plays an important role in the Japanese market, which is home to some of the world’s leading shipowners. More than 90% of our business involves working with colleagues at overseas offices or international clients. We operate a highly dynamic business, connecting Japanese-owned vessels with opportunities around the world—and bringing vessels and opportunities from across the globe to Japan. Entering a New Chapter at the End of 2023 At the end of 2023, we became independent from the Maersk Group, of which we had long been a part, through a management buyout. Reborn as MB Shipbrokers, we have retained the trusted foundation built over more than a century while evolving into a more agile organisation capable of making faster and more flexible decisions.

Why we do

Shipping is one of humanity’s oldest businesses, with a history stretching back thousands of years. At the same time, it remains an exciting industry in which geopolitical developments and technological innovation create new challenges and opportunities somewhere in the world every day. While preserving the trust and traditions we have built over more than a century, we are passionate about using the latest digital tools and data analytics to solve the complex challenges facing today’s maritime industry. True Professionalism Driven by an Owner Mentality Our organization underwent a significant transformation following our independence. Approximately half of our employees became shareholders, giving each of them the perspective and sense of responsibility of a company owner. Rather than focusing solely on individual interests, everyone now considers the same question: “What is the best course of action for the company and, above all, for our clients?” This change in mindset has strengthened morale throughout the organization and enabled us to deliver an even higher standard of service. Looking After Our Clients’ Success Five and Ten Years into the Future Our most important principle is to put our clients first. In the shipping business, it is not unusual for a transaction to take five or even ten years before it produces tangible results. We do not recommend transactions that may ultimately disadvantage our clients—even if those transactions could generate an immediate profit for us. We only present opportunities when we are confident that they will ultimately benefit the client. This integrity is one of the principal reasons we have remained in business for more than a century, and it is a commitment we will continue to uphold.

A Small, Highly Capable Team with a Flat and Agile Structure Our Japan office currently has approximately 13 employees, including around ten Japanese colleagues and three international colleagues. Since the management buyout, our organisational structure has become flatter, significantly increasing the speed of decision-making. Many of our team members are experienced professionals in their 30s and 40s, creating a calm and professional working environment. For this position, however, we are looking for someone with a fresh perspective who has the potential to become a future leader of our Japan office. A Truly Global Working Environment English is used throughout the office every day, and collaboration with our overseas offices is a routine part of our work. We offer junior employees a comprehensive two-year training programme, including training sessions held twice a year at our headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark. These sessions offer far more than classroom learning. They provide valuable opportunities to meet and build relationships with maritime professionals from around the world. The ability to develop a truly global professional network from an early stage in your career is one of the unique advantages of working with us. Professional Pride in an Industry That Never Stops Ships operate across the world’s oceans 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As a result, you may occasionally receive calls or messages on a Friday evening or Saturday morning. This role requires the flexibility to switch back into professional mode when a client needs assistance, even outside normal working hours. In return, the impact and sense of achievement that come with successfully completing a major transaction can be extraordinary.

As a new team member

Are you ready to work on the global stage and help bring together deals worth as much as ¥10 billion? We are looking for junior shipbrokers to act as intermediaries in the sale and purchase (S&P) and chartering of vessels. Shipbroking is often compared to working as a real estate agent—except the “properties” are ships. You review the vessel’s specifications and size, inspect it in person, and negotiate the price and contractual terms. The fundamentals may sound straightforward, but the scale of the business is on an entirely different level. What Makes This Job Exciting A single transaction may be worth ¥1–2 billion—and, in some cases, more than ¥10 billion. Your communication, negotiation, and persuasion skills directly create value and determine the rewards you receive. You will experience the true excitement of business: creating something from nothing and turning an opportunity into a successful deal through your own efforts. The Challenges—and the Growth Beyond Them Key Responsibilities - Approaching shipowners and operators and identifying their business needs. - Proposing and matching vessel sale, purchase, and chartering opportunities for clients in Japan and overseas. - Reviewing vessel specifications and attending on-site vessel inspections. - Negotiating contractual terms and assisting with documentation in English. - Sharing market intelligence with colleagues at our overseas offices and collaborating on international transactions. Who We Are Looking For - Someone excited by the opportunity to participate in major international business transactions - Someone who can build relationships with clients from a long-term perspective—not merely pursue short-term gains, but work with clients over 10 or 20 years - A self-disciplined professional who can respond flexibly when necessary, even outside regular business hours Someone honest, courteous, and committed to building relationships based on trust
