シリコンバレーからやってきた彼女は、持ち前の明るさとがんばりで、今ではすっかりチームの一員です。

約２ヶ月に渡る日本でのインターンシップは果たして

彼女にとってどんなものだったのでしょうか・・・？？

Please introduce yourself.

私はカリフォルニア大学デービス校の4年生で生物心理学を専攻するアシュリー・フルトンです。卒業後は看護学の修士課程に進みたいと考えています。ユタ州のソルトレイクシティで生まれ、カリフォルニア州のシリコンバレーで育ちました。体操・歌・旅が好きで、中でも体操は13年間続けており、大会で沢山の州を周りました。

I’m Ashley Fulton and I am a fourth-year undergraduate student at University of California, Davis. I’m currently studying biological psychology, and I plan to get a master’s degree in nursing at a graduate school in a couple of years. I grew up in the Silicon Valley, California, but I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. Some of my interests include gymnastics, singing, and traveling. In fact, I have been doing gymnastics for 13 years now and I have travelled to many different states in the US to compete!

日本でインターンをしようと決めた理由は？

Why did you decide to do an internship in Japan?

日本でインターンシップに参加しようと決めた理由は、旅をしたり違う国で働く経験をしてみたかったから、そして日本の文化に対し良い印象を持っていたので、それを体験してみたかったからです。そもそもインターンシップは将来どんな仕事に就くとしてもかならず役立つ経験になると思いましたし、また、外国でのインターンシップに参加することで、違うバックグラウンドを持つ人たちと働き、そういった環境の中でも常にオープンな気持ちでいる方法を学べると思いました。

I decided to do an internship in Japan because I wanted to travel and experience work culture in a different country. I chose to study abroad in Japan because I appreciated Japanese culture and I wanted to have a first-hand experience of it. I chose to do an internship because I believed it would be a very important work experience that would be applicable to any job I had in the future. I also wanted to do an internship abroad because I wanted to work with people from different backgrounds and learn how to keep an open mind when doing so.

Why did you choose Hachi Tama?

インターシップの担当アドバイザーからハチたまのことを聞いており、私と面談をしたいと言っていると聞いた時はとても嬉しかったです！ハチたまには楽しく働ける環境があると感じましたし、有益な学びの場だと思ったので、どうしてもハチたまでインターンをしてみたかったんです。そして、スカイプで面談をしたのですが、画面越しに、皆さんのフレンドリーでエネルギッシュで前向きな雰囲気が伝わってきたので、ハチたまを選ぶのは簡単でした！（それとオフィスにねこが2頭いること、海が目の前だということも大きかったです！笑）

When my advisor first told me about Hachi Tama and said that they might be interested in having a Skype interview with me, I was incredibly excited! I really wanted to intern at Hachi Tama because they seemed like they would offer a fun working environment and a beneficial learning environment. Then when I interviewed with some Hachi Tama employees on Skype, I noticed that they seemed friendly, energetic, and hopeful. They made the choice easy for me! (It was also a big plus to know that there were two cats in their office, and their office was right next to a beach!)

ハチたまでの経験を教えてください

Please tell us your experience at Hachi Tama.

ハチたまで働いてがっかりしたことは一度もなかったです。ハチたまの皆さんは、実際に会う前に思っていたとおり、良く働き、ハッピーで、エネルギッシュで、前向きで、フレンドリーでした。そして私が思っていたよりもずっと私を大切にしてくれました。私が価値のあるチームの一員で、何かに貢献しているような気持ちにいつもさせてくれました。働く環境が完璧だっただけではなく、喜んで色々な所へ連れて行ってくれ、日本の文化を紹介してくれました。ハチたまでさせてもらった経験を心から感謝し、皆さんと過ごした時間はぜったいに忘れません。

My impression of Hachi Tama did not let me down. Every employee was just as hardworking, happy, energetic, hopeful, and friendly as I had expected them to be. In fact, they exceeded my expectations by treating me extremely well. They always made me feel like an important and valuable team member that had something to contribute. Not only was the work environment excellent, but they were excited to show me their country and teach me about their culture! I’m extremely grateful for the experiences that I have had at Hachi Tama and I will never forget my time with them!

インターンシップを通じて何を得ましたか？ それは事前に期待したことと異なりますか？

What did you learn from the internship? Is it different from what you expected before joining Hachi Tama?

私がインターンシップを通じて学んだ最も重要なことは、スタートアップで働く際には周りの人々に常に気を配らなくてはならないということです。それは共に働く人々に対してであり、その家族であり、投資家であり、お客様であり、自分自身に対してです。これ以外にも、ビジネスがどう成り立っているか、ゼロからどのように成長していくかなど、様々ことを学びました。また、投資家との接し方・マーケティング・マネジメント・ファイナンス・チームワーク・リーダーシップも学びました。加えて、異なるバックグラウンドを持つ人たちと働く上で、違う視点を受け入れること、オープンな気持ちでいること、言葉の壁を乗り越えるにはどうしたら良いかということを学びました。また、シリコンバレーで育った身としては、スタートアップで実際に働き、アントレプレナーになることやスタートアップの一員になることを経験できたのはとても良い機会でした。

インターシップが始まる前にはマーケティングについてしか学ぶ機会はないだろうと思っていましたが、マネジメント・ファイナンス・チームワーク・リーダーシップまで学ぶことが出来たのは嬉しい驚きで、期待していたことを上回る経験をさせてもらいました！

The biggest and main lesson that I learned during my internship is that you must take care of the people around you when working at a start-up. This includes other employees, the employees’ families, investors, customers, and yourself. Besides this main lesson, I learned a lot about how a business operates and how it grows from the ground up. I learned about investors, marketing, management, finances, teamwork, and leadership. I also learned how to work with people from other backgrounds. I learned to take on a different point of view, stay open-minded, and work through a language barrier during my time at Hachi Tama. After growing up in the Silicon Valley, it was really nice to actually experience working in a start-up and to learn what it takes to be an entrepreneur or a team member of a start-up.

The things I learned at my internship here in Japan were much different than I expected to learn. I expected to only learn about marketing, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I would start learning about management, finances, teamwork and leadership as well.

インターンシップで得たことを今後どのように活かしたいと思いますか？

How would you like to apply what you have learned at Hachi Tama?

ハチたまで学んだことは将来どんな仕事についたとしても生かしていきたいと思います。看護のプロとして、いつかリーダーシップを発揮できるポジションに就いたら、マネジメントやチームワーク、そして周りの人びとに気を配ることの出来るスキルは役立つことと思います。また、私は自分が外国で働いたり、アメリカに移り住んできた人たちと働くなど、自分とは異なるバックグラウンドや文化の人びとと働くことになっても、いつもオープンな気持ちを保っていたいなと思っています。ハチたまで学んだことは将来どんな仕事についても役立つでしょうし、自分自身を助けてくれることと信じています。

I hope to apply what I have learned at Hachi Tama to every job that I have in the future. I hope to someday be in a leadership position within the nursing profession, where management skills, teamwork skills, and the ability to take care of people around me will come in handy. I also hope to stay as open-minded about different points of view and cultures when working with people from different backgrounds, which is something I plan on participating in as well, whether I decide to work abroad or work with people that immigrate to the United States. What I have learned at Hachi Tama has been incredibly beneficial and will help me with any job that I have in the future.
