PLIMES Inc. is a university spin-off company launched in April 2018 to create a pathway to market for academic research innovations originating from the research achievements at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Center for Cybernics Research and Center for Innovative Medicine and Engineering at the University of Tsukuba. We are social enablers, and as a social problem-solving business, we operate to dramatically enhance user experience and social interaction for people with special needs. We received funds from the Japan Science and Technology Agency for creating a start-up to bring the wearable device for monitoring swallowing to market. We spent over 10 years developing these fundamental technologies, and now they are ready to transfer to society.

In commonsense, aging and illness make it increasingly difficult for everyone to take the obvious for granted. “Swallowing” that swallows food and drinks well is one of them. In particular, it is said that many pneumonia in the elderly are caused by this swallowing failure and aspiration. Correct understanding of swallowing are common themes for healthcare, health and welfare, public policy and the food industry as a global social issue. Our policy at PLIMES is to support people's natural lives with technology and promote independent living.

We have offices in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, where are many national research institutions, and Harumi, Tokyo, where urban development is progressing. We promote flexible working styles such as remote work and outsourcing so that members can maximize their skills as a team. Our meetings are often multilingual due to the diverse nationalities and cultures of the members. At the core of PLIMES is a global mind, scientific thinking and an interest in solving social issues.
